'Misskiss' brings dating shows to Boulder
I have friends who are authors, and they keep me reading the hippest
new books. I have other friends who make films, and they tell me about
the little indie flicks that slide under the radar. And I have musician
friends who tell me about superb quartets and new composers.
You would think this would mean I was hip and cultured, but instead
it just means I'm really embarrassed to admit some of my favorite
entertainment exists on TV, in the form of dating shows. I love them
all. "Blind Date." "Elimidate." "Fifth Wheel."
MTV's new "Taildaters," where friends of each of the participants
can page the people during the date. It's all so wrong, yet so, so
right.
So you can imagine my excitement when I discovered that a dating
show would be performed live here in Boulder. It's a new show, and
it's premiering right here at the Boulder Theater. And enough of this
boy-girl stuff, this show is for ladies seeking ladies.
It's called "Misskiss," and the whole idea of the event
is to create not only happy couples, but also an interactive game
show feel. That's right! No more yelling at the television when the
dude sends the wrong girl home on "Elimidate" — you,
yes you, are part of the decision-making process.
A lot of the format is standard — one contestant (called Misskiss)
asks three suitors (called the Kissables) a bunch of questions. Then
at intermission the audience is split into teams — singles and
couples. (So yes, if you're looking for some lovin' yourself, you
may find it in your audience team.) The audience votes, and a Kissable
gets Misskiss. And don't worry, the two rejected Kissables don't go
home alone; after the show the audience can bid on the remaining ladies.
The buzz surrounding the first event has been nothing but positive,
says organizer Susan Jameson. "Women as far away as New Mexico
and California have signed up to be on the first one," she says.
The show takes place at 7 p.m. Nov. 22. And for ladies interested
in finding ladies via a large public venue and a game-show atmosphere
(which sadly still beats the bar scene), you can sign up at www.misskiss.net
until Monday. Call (303) 786-7030 for tickets and more information.
Let out that breath you've been holding — the good ol' Rockies
Brewing Co. (the first microbrewery in Colorado) is releasing its
seasonal beer celebrating the death of all things warm and dry. It's
winter outside, and A-Basin finally has opened, signaling a change
in the social scene from bars and movies to strapping the snowboards
onto your car roof and heading to the mountains at sun-up.
The folks at Rockies Brewing Co. don't let things like this slide
by without celebrating with a new brew, and they've come out with
one just in time; the "Never Summer Ale" is perfectly packaged
with a chair-lift image and wintry colors. And you, my friend, can
be part of the celebration of its release as Rockies Pub, 2880 Wilderness
Place, is holding a tapping party tonight at the brewery to taste-test
the new beer.
You've already seen "The Matrix Revolutions." Now it's
time for smart movies.
