Gotham Parties Help Older Singles Have Fun, Make Matches

There are endless places for singles in their 20s and 30s, but the age bracket of 40-plus has often been neglected -- until now.

Now, there's Gotham Parties, where singles 40 and older go to drink, dance, have fun and maybe, just maybe, meet that special somebody."I think there are a lot of singles events, for people in their 20s and 30s," said one party goer. "And people over 40 -- from 40 to 60 -- are looking for things to do. It's not that easy to find other places to go and congregate and meet other single people. It's something we're trying to reach out for."

These parties are more sedate than the average club scene. Usually, white wine, cheese and crackers are served. Gotham Parties also try to make things different with hiring entertainment such as a magician, or a caricaturist or a psychic. Hosts also work the rooms and help people make matches.

Donna Barnes, a dating expert, and author of "Naked New York," says that the hardest part is making a connection -- and that the mediator, or "host" is a good idea.

"I think one of the hardest things about being a single is the courage of going to talk to someoneyou don't know," Barnes said. "So if there is someone else that can be a mediator in that it makes it a little bit easier."
