Internet chat room for youngsters

Youngsters in Norfolk will soon be able to talk over the internet to trained counsellors on issues ranging from drugs to problems at home.

Norfolk Blurb, a website aimed at young people and run by Norfolk County Council youth and community service, next month is launching a safe chat room Blurbchat, which will have counsellors online.

Blurbchat is a safe way for youngsters to chat over the internet because every user has to complete a paper registration form which requests parental and/or youth-worker consent.

It also verifies the young person's identity and details.

The chat-room facility is only going to be available at certain times when specialists, such as advisors from the Matthew Project, are online to talk to youngsters.

The chat room will be open on Wednesday December 10 from 8-9pm when the issue of problems at home will be discussed and Wednesday December 17 at the same time when the issue of drugs will be addressed.

It is hoped that if the chat room is successful, different ones can be set up for different areas of Norfolk aimed at dealing with problems specific to youngsters in those areas.

Norfolk Blurb, which is designed and maintained by young people themselves, offers a range of services including entertainment guides for youngsters in the county, details of youth groups and an agony aunt. It also gives general information on a range of sensitive issues affecting young people.
